Color:Green with Background:White

...if our page
is beige then the
pullquote area that is beige
will be blended with20% white...

Here we are starting out with an opacity of 20%.

The filter:alpha(opacity=20) is the syntax for Internet Explorer while -moz-opacity:0.2 is the syntax for Mozilla. Anything we put in the div is set to transparent so the
white background will blend with the
display of the child element.

That means that if our page background is beige then the pullquote area that is beige will be blended with 20% white. The full effect looks like this.

Green Text with White Background

Well, we haven't given up yet.
This did take most of the evening and
the result is not good in Internet Explorer
unless we make the background a color
(we are using white here).

The desired opacity effect is achieved in
Mozilla but hasn't been tweaked, just coded for demonstration.

This only works in IE. It works great in IE but doesn't work at all in Mozilla. It was worth the try.

The
first letter in this paragraph is big. We used a font size of 36pt. You can change the font size and adjust the height as needed. And depending on your font it will probably need some adjustment.

For this one we want to force the first big letter to span about five lines. The font-size is adjusted to exactly 100 pixels while the line height is 70 pixels. We tried a line-height of 80 but that leaves a little too much white space.

Color:Brown with Background:White

Brown Text with White Background

The result is best in Internet Explorer
when a background color is defined.
The desired opacity effect is achieved in
Mozilla and IE.

This opacity background with
fully opaque text works in
Mozilla and IE.

We are using a right alignment and forcing the bottom line by scrunching the two words together so that the line doesn't break. A hack by a hack.
Actually, it isn't a hack. Just a method.

YOUR TEXT GOES HERE (OR THERE) The jagged edge on the right pullquote is intentional. We are using a right alignment and forcing the bottom line by scrunching the two words together so that the line doesn't break.

Inline Pull Quotes

You don't have to define the pullquotes in the style sheet. The code is short and doesn't take the many keystrokes. It's just another paragraph in CSS.

...it depends on what we are highlighting or lowlighting...

This would usually contain the quote

we see in magazine layout. It might. It depends
on what you type in here.

This one has a jagged edge in IE but renders well in Mozilla. We used a transparent background. Internet Explorer needs a background color other than transparent for smooth edges. To demonstrate opacity with text the
outer div container has a float:right. This example begins with the color
named darkgreen with an opacity of 25%, then 75%, 90%, and bold (on the 25%) and ends with an opacity of 90%. The color darkgreen only needs to be specified once.
The rest is automagic. This looks great in Mozilla but not so great in Internet Explorer.
